NASA Reveals Latest Findings from Moon to Mars Architecture Concept Review

The outcomes of NASA’s 2023 Moon to Mars Architecture Concept Review were released on Tuesday. This review is part of the agency’s efforts to create a roadmap for exploring the solar system for the benefit of humanity. The moon to Mars architecture approach takes into account feedback from various stakeholders, including U.S. industry, academia, international partners, and the NASA workforce. The 2023 Architecture Concept Review refined the existing architecture and strategies for the first crewed missions to Mars. It identified seven key decisions that need to be made early in the process of planning the mission to the red planet.

According to Catherine Koerner, the associate administrator of the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, the newly released documents represent the progress made in defining a clear approach to exploration. They also outline how NASA will incorporate new technologies and capabilities as they develop both in the U.S. and abroad. Koerner emphasized that this process ensures that all the agency’s efforts, in collaboration with its partners, are focused on achieving their overarching exploration goals for the benefit of everyone.

The newly released documents include the 2023 Architecture Definition Document, which provides a detailed technical overview of NASA’s moon to Mars architecture approach and process. Additionally, there is an executive overview and 13 white papers that address frequently raised topics related to NASA’s exploration path.

Nujoud Merancy, the deputy associate administrator for strategy and architecture at NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, highlighted the agency’s progress in refining the process for moon to Mars architecture concept development over the past year. The focus in the coming months will be on addressing any gaps in the architecture and conducting further reviews to ensure the successful execution of crewed Mars missions.

In April 2023, NASA released the initial Architecture Definition Document, providing detailed information on how NASA’s Moon to Mars Objectives align with specific architecture elements. The organization conducted workshops to gather feedback and conducted an internal concept review later in the year, where leaders from various departments within NASA convened to discuss architecture requirements and improvements. Moving forward, NASA will maintain this rhythm and enhance the architecture on an annual basis.

As part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, the agency aims to establish a solid foundation for long-term scientific exploration on the moon. Additionally, NASA plans to send the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut to the lunar surface. These efforts will pave the way for future human expeditions to Mars, benefiting humanity as a whole.
