Journey through time: Planet Earth 5 billion years ago

The Earth is assumed to have been created 4.6 billion years ago when fragments of the massive disc-shaped cloud of matter that also gave rise to the Sun collided with one another.

Asteroids and tiny early planets known as planetesimals were created as clumps of this gas and dust were gradually drawn together by gravity. The planets in the Solar System, including Earth, were created as a result of these objects repeatedly colliding with one another and growing larger.

The precise details of how the Earth was created are still being worked out.
