Can DART Deflect an Asteroid?

NASA’S DART is on a mission to test whether we can deflect an asteroid from its orbital path and see if such an approach can be used to prevent Earth from being hit by an asteroid sometime in the future.

Didymos’ moon Dimorphos is the target of the Double Asteroid Redirect mission, or DART. It’s also demonstrating some new technologies like advanced solar arrays and an advanced ion engine.

If all goes well, ESA’s Hera spacecraft will verify if we can use kinetic impact to defend Earth.
