This radiation is thought to be the afterglow of the Big Bang, which was produced about 380,000 years after the Big Bang when the universe cooled enough for atoms to form. The CMB is nearly uniform in all directions and has a temperature of about 2.73 Kelvin, which is exactly what we would expect if the universe started as a hot, dense, and rapidly expanding state.
- Redshift of Galaxies: Observations of distant galaxies show that they are moving away from us and each other. This is known as the redshift, which is caused by the stretching of light waves as the galaxies move away from each other. This observation suggests that the universe is expanding and that everything was once packed together in a tiny, dense state.
- Abundance of Light Elements: The Big Bang theory predicts the formation of light elements, such as hydrogen and helium, during the early stages of the universe. Observations of the abundance of these elements in the universe are consistent with the predictions of the Big Bang theory.
- Large Scale Structure of the Universe: The distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in the universe shows a pattern of clustering that is consistent with the predictions of the Big Bang theory. This clustering is thought to be the result of tiny density fluctuations in the early universe, which grew into the large-scale structures we observe today.
Together, these lines of evidence provide a compelling case for the Big Bang theory. While there are still many unanswered questions about the universe, such as the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the Big Bang theory remains our best explanation for the origin and evolution of the universe.
