According to an expert, artificial intelligence has the potential to annihilate humanity within a mere span of two years.

There is a slim possibility that humanity will endure.

Eliezer Yudkowsky, the well-known AI researcher known for his pessimistic views, has shared a new prediction regarding the future of humanity. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he expressed his belief that our remaining timeline may be closer to five years rather than 50.

He emphasized that it could even be as short as two years or as long as 10. When asked to clarify what he meant by “remaining timeline,” Yudkowsky explained that it refers to a potential machine-induced apocalypse akin to scenarios seen in movies like Terminator or The Matrix. Despite the grim outlook, he pointed out that there is still a slim chance for humanity to survive, a fact that many people fail to recognize.

The entire article from The Guardian is highly recommended for reading. Lamont interviewed various influential individuals in the field, such as Brian Merchant and Molly Crabapple, all expressing skepticism towards the notion that we should automatically embrace new technology, even if it may not be beneficial for society.

Nowadays, much of this skepticism is directed towards AI. Critics question why we should view this technology as inevitable, especially when it has the potential to displace and disrupt a significant number of jobs.

In the case of Yudkowsky, the concern is that AI could pose an existential threat. His comments were particularly thought-provoking in the article, which is not surprising given his background. For example, last year he suggested the idea of bombing data centers to prevent the advancement of AI.

Yudkowsky mentioned to The Guardian that he has reconsidered this proposal, albeit only slightly. He still supports the concept of targeting data centers, but no longer believes that nuclear weapons should be used for this purpose.

“I would choose my words more carefully now,” he informed the newspaper.
