Exposing graphite to an intense ultrashort mid-infrared laser pulse induces a highly conductive light-matter hybrid phase as optically excited electrons are strongly coupled to coherent optical phonons. The observations of such a strongly optically driven many-body state become possible by studying the lifetime of the excited electronic states with an attosecond soft-X-ray pulse. Credit: ICFO
